Field Liners have
been in commercial use since 1994
when
Eskom in South Africa
implemented the very first
generation mono-layer Field Liner on
100 creosote treated utility poles
at Park Rennie in Kwa Zulu Natal’s
coastal area, South Africa.

Eskom is South Africa’s largest
Electric Utility Company and was
established in 1923. It is the
largest producer of electricity in
Africa and is also one of the top
ten utilities in the world in terms
of power generation capacity and
revenues.
After highly
positive results from the initial
field trial at Park Rennie and a
larger scale implementation at
Umbumbulu,
Eskom issued a National Stock
Number for Field Liners, adopting
them as a standard for installation
on utility poles.

In 1995,
eThekwini Electricity,
previously known as Durban Metro
Electricity, placed an initial order
for Field Liners and has continued
to implement them ever since.
eThekwini Electricity is the
licensed electricity distributor for
the eThekwini Municipality on the
east coast of South Africa.
eThekwini Electricity purchases
power annually from Eskom, supplying
over half a million customers.
Benoni Town Council near to
Johannesburg, South Africa, became a
user of Field Liners in 1996.

In 1999, Biotrans
achieved the very first Field Liner
sale in the USA to
Seattle City Light, Seattle’s
Municipal Electric Utility owned by
it’s citizens. Environmental
concerns were the primary drivers
behind the decision of Seattle City
Light to use the Field Liner,
recognising the potential
environmental impacts of leachates
from pressure treated Utility Poles.
Seattle City Light's Mission: To
provide stable, competitively priced
and environmentally sound
electricity to customers.
In 2003, an
article was published on
the Internet and in 2007,
Seattle City Light continue to
use the Two Piece Field Liner,
supplied by Protective Packaging and
installed by their pole supplier,
Stella Jones

2004 saw initial Field Liner
implementations at
Buffalo City in South Africa and
in Kenya with an initial order from
Kenya Power & Lighting Co.
Kenya Power & Lighting Company
is
responsible for the transmission,
distribution and retail of
electricity to 850,000 customers
throughout Kenya and owns and
operates the national transmission
and distribution grid.

Field Liner business
has continued to grow with further
implementations by existing clients
in Africa and in the USA. In
addition to
Seattle City Light, other
utilities in Washington State have
implemented Field Liners in
environmentally sensitive areas.
Puget Sound Energy
commissioned
Seattle City Light engineers to
implement lined poles in two
environmentally sensitive pole
installations.
Snohomish PUD have also
installed Two Piece Field Liners in
boundary wetlands areas.

Snohomish PUD placed an initial
order for the PPL Field Liner, the
latest One Piece multi-layer
laminate sleeve in 2007 and have
already implemented these. The
website shows the installation of
PPL Field Liners by
Snohomish PUD which took place
in March 2007
