The PPL Field Liner is available in
two versions, the PPL ‘Two Piece’
Field Liner and the PPL ‘One Piece’
Field Liner. The PPL Two Piece
Field Liner is designed to be
installed at the
Pole Supplier, stored and then
shipped to the ultimate Electric
Utility user as required for pole
settings. The PPL One Piece Field
Liner is designed to be installed by
the Linemen at the point of setting
as a sleeve that is slipped over the
post immediately prior to planting.
Some customers prefer to have the
liner installed at the Pole Supplier
and some prefer to install it at the
point of setting. Protective
Packaging Ltd will continue to offer
both options.
PPL Two Piece Field Liner
With the PPL Two Piece Field Liner,
a strong outer protective Green
Polyethylene Shrink-film
was applied by the
Pole Supplier to secure the
Field Liner to the Utility Pole. The
aim of the outer layer, UV Resistant
and 530microns thick, is to protect
the Field Liner during storage,
transport and handling. After the
PPL Field Liner sleeve has been
slipped over the pole, the outer
protective layer is fitted and heat
shrunk so as to secure and protect
the PPL Field Liner itself in
storage and handling situations.
The most effective method of
applying the Green Shrink-film
for the PPL Two Piece Field Liner is
by way of direct heat from a heat
gun. The photographs below show the
mode of installation employed at
Stella Jones.
Seattle City Light are major
users of the PPL Two Piece Field
Liner with over 7000 environmentally
friendly poles in the ground today
protected by the PPL Field Liner.

At this time, a number of clients
continue to use the PPL Two Piece
Field Liner and there are no
immediate plans to phase the product
out of the market although it is
believed that existing users will be
attracted to the simpler, more cost
effective method of installation
with the PPL One Piece Field Liner
PPL One Piece Field Liner
In 2004, the PPL One Piece Field
Liner was born. A simple to install
slip-on sleeve, the PPL One Piece
Field Liner incorporates an outer
layer of strong, UV Resistant
Polyester within the laminate
itself. The design of the PPL One
Piece Field Liner was to allow
Utility companies to fit the PPL
Field Liner at the point of setting
which was impractical for the PPL
Two Piece Field Liner.
Subject to a filed Patent
Application, the technique of tying
an outer Polyester layer with two
inner Polyethylene and an aluminium
layer to create a 4 layer laminate
material was achieved through the
manufacturing and technological
innovation of Protective Packaging
Ltd, specialists in the manufacture
of barrier laminate materials since
1988.
Installation is very simple at the
point of setting. The sleeve is
simply slipped over the pole,
wrapped around to fit tightly, the
double-sided adhesive tape strip
protection removed and the Field
Liner secured firmly in place. The
end is crimped by hand and the pole
is then ready to be set.

The photographs to the right and
above show the process of an
installation which clearly
illustrates how quick and easy the
PPL One Piece Field Liner is to
install.
Field Liner Material Specifications
The PPL Field Liner is a patented
Multi-Layer liner system that
increases the effectiveness of
preservatives by preventing them
from leaching out of the pole by
means of a barrier laminate.
Protective Packaging Ltd offers a
range of configurations of the PPL
Field Liner and the choice depends
on the needs of the Utility, usually
based on their local environmental
challenges and requirements. There
are three versions of the Field
Liner based on three different
laminate materials.
PP344
PP344 is a 4 layer laminate.
The outer layer is a strong,
abrasion and UV resistant Nylon
which is 25
microns thick. The next layer of
160 micron
High Density Polyethylene is
extremely strong and tear resistant.
The penultimate layer is 9
microns of
Aluminium Foil which is a
impermeable barrier to preservatives
leaching out of the pole and to
organisms & fungi in the soil. The
inner layer is 150 microns of Polyethylene.
Overall, PP344 is around 346 microns
thick with the
laminate ‘tie layers’ which means it
is tough and effective, but still
light and flexible.
PP344
is proven to
be termite resistant and is the logical choice
for clients operating in
Formosan termite
affected areas such as
Southern California, Arizona, New
Mexico, Texas, Virginia, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North
Carolina, south Carolina, Tennessee,
Florida and Hawaii and for any
Utilities experiencing subterranean
insect attack or operating in ‘High
Deterioration’ areas as defined
within the AWPA standards.
PP893
PP893 is a three layer laminate.
The outer layer is 12 microns (US :
48 gauge) of Polyester, the middle
layer 8 microns (US : 0.0003”) of
Aluminium and the inner layer 150
microns (US : 6mil) of ‘Bioplast’
polyethylene, overall around 170
microns.
PP893 is a general purpose Field
Liner material and this is the
material utilised by Utilities in
the Pacific North West that
experience pole failures due to
fungal decay. It is best utilised in
the medium deterioration areas of
the USA.
PP893NB
PP893NB is a three layer
laminate which has neither an
insecticidal or biocidal layer. This
is the logical choice for Utilities
that do not suffer from either
fungal decay or subterranean insects
attacking their Utility Poles and
which are essentially looking for an
environmentally friendly means to
prevent preservatives leaching from
their Utility poles.
Identical to PP893, the outer layer is 12
microns (US : 48 gauge) of
Polyester, the middle layer 8
microns (US : 0.0003”) of Aluminium
and the inner layer 150 microns (US
: 6mil) of black polyethylene,
overall around 170 microns.
PP530
Many utilities prefer not to
maintain any stock of poles at their
own locations but rather to ‘call
off ‘ poles as they are required for
service. In order to be able to
quickly fulfil orders, pole
suppliers create a stock of PPL
Field Lined poles so that they can
readily satisfy orders when
received.
The storage and handling environment
at a typical pole yard creates the
need to protect the PPL Field Liner
from damage. Whilst abrasion
resistant in it’s own right, the
Field Liner could be damaged in the
harsh handling environment of the
pole yard and so a protective layer
is needed. This is provided by PP530.
PP530 is a 530micron (2120
gauge) thick, very strong and UV
stabilised Polyethylene Green
Shrinkfilm. Once the
Biotechnological PPL Field Liner
material has been slipped over the
pole, it is then wrapped with PP530
material and heat shrunk. The poles
can then be stored and when
eventually transported to the
Utility, the outer layer has
protected the integrity of the inner
liner.

Sizes
PPL Field Liners are available in 3
standard sizes with the additional
option to ‘design your own’ PPL
Field Liner. Sizes have been
optimised so as to give the greatest
flexibility possible from the
standard sizes :-
Small Size
The Small Size PPL Field Liner has
an internal circumference of 1240mm
(approximately 48”) is designed to
fit poles with a maximum
circumference of around 48”.
Obviously the class of and length of
pole this Field Liner will be
suitable for depends on the
particular species of wood utilised
but typically, the Small Size would
be the liner to choose for a 50’
Class 3 Western Redcedar for
example. Given that the ANSI Class
tables provide a minimum
circumference measurement at 6’ from
the butt end of a pole, care does
need to be taken to ensure that the
correct size Field Liner is ordered.
Also, there is +/- 5mm tolerance on
sizes of the Field Liner.
After the Field Liner sleeve has
been slipped over the end of the
Utility Pole, it is wrapped tightly
around the pole to take up any
excess and the excess plus the 6”
overlap sheet is then secured using
the pull-off adhesive strip.
The overall result is a tightly
fitting sleeved Utility pole that
can now be manoeuvred into the hole
and ‘planted’ The small size Field
Liner has a standard length of 8’.

Large Size
The Large Size PPL Field Liner has
an internal circumference of 1850mm
and is suitable for poles with a
maximum circumference of around 6’.
Using Western Redcedar again as the
example, the large size Field Liner
is suitable for any distribution
pole and also transmission poles up
to around 80’.
The large size Field Liner has a
standard length of 12’.

Supersize
For the very largest wood Utility
poles, a Supersize Field Liner may
be required. With an internal
circumference of 2460mm (just over
8’), the Supersize PPL Field Liner
is large enough for example to fit a
125’ H6 Douglas fir Transmission
pole.
The Supersize Field Liner has a
standard length of 16’.
