Location : Mississippi, USA

Study : AWPA E1 Standard Testing for Resistance to Formosan Termite

Dates : August 2007 - September 2007

The Mississippi State University Department of Forest Products’ Forest & Wildlife Research Centre is a world renowned test centre for Formosan termites. With many of the southern states of the US encountering serious economic losses from the activities of the Formosan termite, the MSU was an ideal facility to test the PPL Field Liner material in laboratory conditions.

The testing carried out at MSU was designed to conform with and exceed the requirements of the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) standard E1 (as required within the P20 standard for ‘Barrier Wraps’. ) The fundamentals of the test programme are described below and the results will be published as soon as available. The information below is an extract from the agreed testing programme.

 EVALUATION OF BARRIER WRAP

 BACKGROUND

Protective Packaging Limited contacted the Forest Products Department (FPD) to discuss initiating a research program with their products.  This proposal covers the initial program of investigation.  Additional studies may be proposed as addenda to this proposal and conducted as a data base is developed.

PROCEDURE

AWPA E1 Standard Method for Laboratory  Evaluation to Determine Resistance to Subterranean Termites

Method: Southern yellow pine specimens will be prepared by FPD and sent to the sponsor to be covered by the sponsor’s product. These samples prepared for exposure by the sponsor will then be returned to the FPD for inclusion in testing. Untreated southern pine controls and southern pine blocks treated with CCA will be included for comparison.  No choice and choice testing will be conducted with Coptotermes formosanus.  The tables below show the study design.
